If you child is a little bit older, reading on their own and has homework, then there is one option which leaps out. This is the design in which there is a bed on top and a relaxing seat and work area underneath.

With this design the seat will pull out right into a single bed, so magnificent for either sleepovers, or for just lounging around reading. The work area is quite small, but this doesn't appear to be a problem. The configuration means that the futon can be used as an extended work area, if they're referencing books or maps then with a swivel desk chair they can simply spread their materials over the futon and write at the table.

There is a 3rd feature which is similar to the set up with a work station, but in this area there is storage rather than a desk. Having a separate desk may appear more realistic at first glance. This is an adult method of looking at the setup. Discuss this feature with your children and you will probably find that they're not so keen on it. By having drawers and storage space below the top bunk it makes the area underneath less fun. If you like to maximise your storage area then you might be better of with a mid height bed with storage, instead of a bunk bed with futon?

Which ever bunk bed with futon design you opt for it is critical to discuss it with your children and to make sure that they are happy. It is also a good idea to invest in some new bedding and accessories to make it that bit more special and personal.
